Frequently asked questions
Easy Read follows an accepted format. Common features include large print, clear font, easy words, short sentences, illustrations and minimal design.
Easy Read has been developed for - and by - people with learning disabilities. But lots of people benefit - including people with visual impairments, dyslexia, or simply do not have enough time to read the full version!
I can produce both. Plain English documents do not have illustrations for every paragraph, and the font is not quite as large. It is written in "everyday" English, and is suitable for a wider audience.
Anything! If it is an entirely unfamiliar topic I may come back to you with questions about unfamiliar acronyms and jargon, but otherwise, no document is too gnarly. My most familiar topics are social care, health, housing, advocacy, research, education and personal budgets. I am always up for a challenge!
Yes, absolutely! I have made guidebooks, leaflets, posters and more, where there has not been an "original" document to work from.
Organisations have told me that it is very useful to have a "fresh pair of eyes" on a project. Also, when permanent staff are tied up on other projects, I can work quickly to get the job done. Many organisations do not have enough Easy Read work to employ someone, but they keep me on-hand, ready to help when needed. I have the flexibility to work over the weekend if you are up against a really tight deadline.
For larger projects, yes. I work with a group of people with learning disabilities who can review your document.
2 rounds of amendments are always included in the price of my work. This gives you the opportunity to ask the people you work with for their opinions, which we can integrate into the final version.
Yes, absolutely. I spent 15 years as a Project Manager at Dorset People First, running a wide range of co-produced projects alongside people with learning disabilities. It is something I absolutely love to do!
Yes! 2 rounds of amendments are always included in the price, provided your original version has not changed substantially.
Anything from an hour to a month! Please email me or book a zoom call to talk about your project and the needs of your organisation and the people you serve. I will give you a completion date along with your quote, which we can agree together.
Yes, I can provide introductory workshops, online or in-person.
It takes time and practice to get really good, but this will certainly get you started.
I give you a quote (not an estimate!). For small projects I will invoice your organisation when we are finished.
For larger projects, I ask for 2-3 payments: upfront, mid-project and on completion. I write a proposal in advance, which we will agree before I start work.
Go to my contact page: https://www.claretarling.co.uk/contact-10 You can email me, fill in a web-form and/or book a free 30-minute Zoom call. Tell me as much as you can about your organisation, the information you would like translated, how quickly you need it, your branding requirements and anything else that may help me!
I will look at your existing information, then give you a price and a finish date.
I look forward to hearing from you!
I write quotes based on my day-rate, and how much work I can get done in a day. I do not charge per word or per page, because every project is so different. I have been making Easy Read information for 20 years, and I work fast, so I hope you will be pleased with your quote!
